Foot & Ankle Condition
Flat Foot
Assessment of painful or progressive flat-foot deformity and associated problems.
Flat foot describes a lowering of the arch. It is common and often painless, but a painful, stiff or progressively worsening flat foot warrants specialist assessment.
Common symptoms
Arch or inner-ankle pain, fatigue with walking, a visible change in foot shape and, sometimes, ankle or knee discomfort.
Common causes
Flexible flat foot, tendon dysfunction, previous injury or arthritis of the foot's joints.
Treatment options
Supportive footwear, orthoses and physiotherapy help many people. Surgery may be considered for painful deformity that does not respond to non-surgical treatment.
