Foot & Ankle Condition
Bunion / Hallux Valgus
A painful or progressive deformity affecting the big toe and forefoot.
A bunion (hallux valgus) is a gradual deformity in which the big toe drifts towards the smaller toes, producing a prominent bump at its base.
Common symptoms
A painful bump, difficulty with footwear, redness over the joint and, in some cases, changes to the smaller toes.
Common causes
Footwear, inherited foot shape and biomechanical factors can all contribute. It often progresses gradually over time.
Treatment options
Non-surgical care includes footwear modification, padding and orthoses. Surgery may be considered when pain and deformity limit daily life despite these measures.
