Arthritis of the foot and ankle causes joint pain, stiffness and swelling. Common forms include osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis and arthritis after previous injury.

How it is assessed
Clinical examination with weight-bearing X-rays and, where needed, further imaging to understand which joints are affected.
Treatment options
Footwear changes, orthoses, activity modification, physiotherapy and medication come first. Surgery — including fusion or, in selected cases, joint replacement — may be considered when symptoms persist.
